High-precision Augmented Reality – metaio Engineer complements FARO measuring arms

Categories: FARO ScanArm,FaroArm — Tags: , , , , — vanputts @ March 4, 2013 — 8:19 am

Augmented Reality means to enrich and enhance the user’s view of the real world with additional digital information, e.g. a virtual 3D-model that originates from CAD.

This content is made visible on a monitor, a tablet PC, within the user’s field of view using a head-mounted display or projected onto the respective area. Virtual and actual realities merge in the most natural manner that is possible.

metaio Engineer is software that brings Augmented Reality to the industrial field. And it is a perfect complement to an existing measuring arm. The best of both worlds is combined: a quick and direct visualization with the precision of a measuring arm.

With the new release of metaio Engineer 5.0, an interface to support FARO measuring arms is already built-in. All necessary features are integrated by default, from calibration to functions that support your daily tasks.

Previously, in case of quality control every relevant point had to be measured to discover deviations between the CAD model and the related assembly part. metaio Engineer and Augmented Reality accelerate this process by identifying errors and selectively measuring deviations.

These are the basic steps to set up an Augmented Reality system based on e.g the FARO Edge:

1. Mount an industry camera with available adapters onto the grip of the measuring arm
2. Calibrate camera and spatial relation between camera and measuring arm
3. Determine position of the arm in relation to the subject of analysis
4. Visualize a CAD model onto the existing model, part or product
5. Compare planned vs. actual state, measurements and more features

LeaderTek and Rapidform Bring 3D Scanning to Life of Pi!

Categories: FARO Laser Scanner — Tags: , , , , — vanputts @ February 28, 2013 — 4:45 pm

LeaderTek used a FARO Focus 3D laser scanner to digitally capture the lifeboat and floating raft. The studio making the 3D adventure film ‘Life of Pi’ hired 3D scanning service bureau LeaderTek to occupy itself with the many amazing special effects.

LeaderTek used a FARO Focus 3D laser scanner to digitally capture the lifeboat and floating raft. They used Rapidform XOR reverse engineering software to merge and optimize the massive point cloud scan data into a mesh STL file.

Metrologic launches i-X4 Remote

Categories: FARO Laser Tracker,FaroArm — Tags: , , — vanputts @ December 5, 2012 — 10:12 am

X4 i-Remote is a new mobile application developed by Metrologic, which gives you the freedom to move away from your computer to measure large parts in remote areas. Metrolog X4, the universal 3D metrology software is now available with the optional i-Remote, a new application for Apple mobile devices (iPod touch and iPhone).

Communication between i-Remote and Metrolog X4 is provided through a local and secured W-LAN network. Metrolog X4 software is compatible with the FaroArm, the FARO Laser Tracker and Laser Scanner Focus3D.

User video of the FARO Laser Scanner with Autodesk’s Factory Design Suite

Categories: FARO Laser Scanner — Tags: , , , — vanputts @ October 18, 2012 — 10:00 am

Autodesk and FARO work closely together in providing solutions for 3D-scanning and design. Users can for example directly import 3D point clouds in the Autodesk software to further process these data.

Below video shows the use of a FARO Laser Scanner Focus3D in combination with Autodesk’s Factory Design Suite at Feige Filling, a company specialised in filling technology for liquid and pasty products in drums, cans, hobbocks, pails, bags or IBC.

Autodesk Factory Design Suite provides industrial designers the tools needed to create 2D-and 3D-models of industrial buildings.

It allows designers of industrial enterprises more effectively create and display circuit configuration of the equipment.
