Scanner boosts realism and accuracy in video games

How video games become even more realistic-lookingVideo games have gone on to become an art. The more acccurate and sophisticated the game, the more sensational the player’s experience.

In this respect EA Sports’ environmental artists have been touring the country to collect 3D-material for the next ‘NCAA Football’ game, by scanning several stadiums, such as the Alabama Stadium.

“The levels of accuracy in the FARO scanner help us deliver a more sophisticated surface detail,” said EA Sports art director Paul Kashuk. “We’re already seeing the benefits of this across our label as more of EA’s teams are becoming interested in the technology.”

Although it’s not yet clear if 3D video games will ‘set the world on fire’, the FARO laser scanner does support it by rendering images in true 3D. With this technology “users can use special glasses to make images appear as if they are jumping off flat-screen, 3D televisions”!

Alabama Stadium in football video game with Focus3D

Alabama Stadium scanned with the FARO Focus3DGreg Palinkas, an environment artist with Electronic Arts Tiburon, adjusts the FARO Laser Scanner Focus3D before making scans of Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Alabama (USA). Palinkas gathers data on the stadium and the University of South Alabama football team for inclusion in EA Sports’ “NCAA Football” video game.

“It not only will scan the points but it will take color photographs and when you put it into the software (in process of building the stadium for the game) you can overlay the color into those points and you get an accurate representation of the colorization of the lights during the day, what the different materials look like. It’s really outstanding.”

Seen on the web l Scanning the bigger picture

One of the world’s largest commercially available 3D laser scanners, the Faro Photon 120 is already used by surveyors, engineers, planners, the FBI and the Metropolitan Police. It has also been used to analyse problems in nuclear reactors.

The Bartlett has been given a scanner on loan from Faro to see if it can find new uses for the technology, which is capable of producing highly accurate 3D representations of almost any built project in a video-game-style environment which can then be exported into cad, Rhino and a number of other relevant programmes.
